Lefkada

This black variety is known as Lefkas or Lefkada. The top of shoots is white and fluffy. The young leaves are downy and with brown areas. The adult leaves are large, orbiculate, coarse and pearly, fully or slightly 3-lobed. The petiolar sinus is in narrow lyre shape with overlapping edges and a gap at the base. The teeth are ribbed and broad, the underside is extremely downy. The clusters are average size, cylindroconical, compact and may have two fairy developed side clusters. The grapes are round, black, average size, juicy and thick-skinned, maturing at the end of August. In Cyprus, Lefkada is found in isolated cases among the vines of Pitsilia and Panayia. The first wines have been highly colored, quite rich and experiments ought to be continued in order to discover the oenological value of this variety in Cyprus.
